Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.Expand your horizons, advance your career, and contribute to a secure future for generations. Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector invites you to bring your pioneering spirit to our collaborative teams. As a Software Engineer – Level 2 located in Promontory, UT, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one.
We are looking for innovative software engineers who excel at building advanced engineering toolsets for the design and analysis of solid rocket motors. In this role, you will develop high‑quality, in‑house applications that streamline complex workflows and support mission‑critical engineering analyses for the aerospace and defense sectors. Your software will be used directly by propulsion engineers to design and analyze the next generation of space launch and national defense rockets.
You will join a multidisciplinary team of software engineers, working in close collaboration to design, implement, and support modeling and simulation (M&S) tools. These tools enhance our engineering organization’s ability to design and analyze solid rocket motors, driving greater performance, improved process efficiency, and continued innovation.
This position works on a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off. This is a fully on‑site role at our Promontory, UT facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain modeling and simulation software to support advanced engineering analysis of solid rocket motor designs.
- Ensure high‑quality software development and deployment practices, including testing, documentation, configuration management, and troubleshooting, to deliver robust tools that meet user needs.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and subject matter experts to translate technical requirements into functional, user‑friendly software tools.
- Develop intuitive user interfaces and workflows so design and analysis engineers can configure and run complex simulations efficiently.
- Optimize numerical algorithms and data processing pipelines for performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Provide technical support and guidance to end‑users, ensuring tools are properly integrated into their workflows and continuously improved based on feedback.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by assessing current practices, recommending enhancements, and driving efficiency in engineering processes.
- Experience using modern software development tools (e.g., Git, issue tracking, unit testing frameworks).
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new technical domains quickly.
Basic Qualifications for Level 2:
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with 2+ years of professional software development experience, OR a Master’s degree in a STEM field.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.
- Proficiency in Python or C++, including experience delivering production‑quality, maintainable software (testing, documentation, configuration management).
- Demonstrated exposure to engineering modeling and simulation environments through academic projects, internships, or professional work (e.g., finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, structural or thermal analysis tools).
- Experience collaborating with domain experts (e.g., mechanical, aerospace, or systems engineers) to translate technical requirements into software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using common software libraries and frameworks such as NumPy, SciPy, Qt, Boost, OpenMP, or MPI.
- Familiarity with finite-element analysis (FEA) tools, computational modeling, or engineering pre-/post-processing software.
- Experience creating or modifying engineering‑related software tools that support analysis, visualization, or workflow automation.
- Background in aerospace, defense, or similarly high‑tech sectors.
- Proven industry experience in engineering analysis tool development in highly technical industries (e.g., aerospace, defense, energy).
- Experience developing engineering tools that leverage a variety of specialized third-party libraries such as PETSc, VTK, MFC, or CUDA.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate on engineering software projects involving diverse stakeholders; experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to a culture of technical excellence is a plus.
